THE MOJO SESSIONS is Sleepy Guitar Johnson's third
CD and first on the POWERED BY MOJO Label. Recorded winter of 2007-
2008, the CD pays homage to the progenitors of Blues and Rock, but
is boldly branded by Sleepy's innovative 21st Century
Blues sound. At once melodic and danceable, you'll find yourself
humming these original tales of love and life as Sleepy wraps his
Gibson electric, Dobro slide & harmonica around his insinuating
vocals. Carl Byron's stellar roadhouse piano and organ playing
keeps you moving down the blues highway: from New Orleans to
Chicago to California out West as he channels Johnnie Johnson, Otis
Spann and Fats Domino. John "Cool Hand" Morris carries the bottom
end thump on Fender Bass as he marries his propulsive sound to
Michael Brown's locked down drums. Musical guests include: Larry
Taylor - Bass, Richard Innes - Drums, April Hendrix - Vocal Duet,
Amanda Rice - Backing Vocals.
Produced and Mixed by Denis Degher at his Old School Ranch
Studio in Paso Robles, crank it up, this disk sounds big and warm
like vintage vinyl. And Degher ought to know, in his former
iteration as producer/engineer/guitarist and owner of Red Zone
Studios in SOCAL, he's worked with the likes of Brian Setzer,
Earth, Wind and Fire, LA Guns, Danny Federici (Bruce Springsteen),
?uestlove, The Sweet Inspirations, No Doubt, Tupac, Santana, Buddy
Guy, The Ventures, Airto, The Watts Prophets and on and on.
If you love roots based American music, Guitar World Magazine
summed it up best, "You never know how and when you are going to
discover a great new talent . . . Sleepy's music is clearly blues
inspired and is, in fact, drenched with the down home stuff, yet it
is completely original, avoiding virtually of the cliches we have
come to associate with the music."
"...enduring piece of near art." Glen Starkey - New Times
